Five Simple Steps To Beautiful Winter Feet

Dec 12, 2008 Elena Lipson

During the winter months, we spend most of our time in woolly socks and warm boots. It's time to free your feet from hibernation and give them some TLC...naturally.

There is nothing more relaxing then getting thee to a spa or beauty salon and letting some lovely lady take your feet under her wings and transform them into sandal worthy, summer ready beauties. However, there are some advantages to connecting with your toes at home every once in a while.

First, you can save some of that winter cash and treat your beloved family and friends to some extra holiday treats. Second, you can save that green and let it grow for a rainy (or sunny) day. Finally, there is a zen slowing down enough to look down at your own wonderful feet. After all, those two appendages work hard all year long at take you all the places you need to go.

Here are five simple steps to reconnecting with your fabulous feet and treating yourself to a moment of pure relaxing indulgence. If you'd like, invite your best bud and treat each other to a foot spa day.

The unveiling

  • Remove and lingering remnants of nail polish. Use a cotton-ball (preferrably organic cotton) and earth-friendly nail polish remover, which is naturally derived from crops and not petroleum based ingredients. It is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. Try Suncoat Products. ecodiva tip: don't use tissue to remove polish. It will not absorb well and will fall apart in the process.
  • Soak your tootsies in a bath of epsom salts mixed with a few drops of your favorite essential oil for about 10 minutes. Try using a large glass bowl, or invest in a foot spa that you can indulge in throughout the year and use only for your feet. ecodiva tip: instead of turning on the t.v. while you are soaking, close your eyes and focus on your breath, your heartbeat and your feet for a quick meditation. Think about all of the places your feet have taken you and how grateful you are for all the places yet to discover.

The Cleansing

  • Dry your feet with a clean organic cotton towel. With a pumice stone, gently exfoliate the bottoms of your feet, focusing a few extra strokes on the rough spots. Add a squirt of your favorite natural lotion before hand for a bit of extra moisture. ecodiva tip: really focus on the moment and creating small circles of healing
  • Now it's time to exfoliate. A great at-home exfoliater is as simple as organic olive oil mixed with either raw sugar or sea salt. Rub this mixture all over your feet in an upwards motion towards your legs for a few minutes, then rinse your feet in the foot bath.

The Big Trim

  • Using a good quality toenail clipper trim your toenails into a clean, but not too short length. Using a quality nail file, soften any sharp edges that can catch on socks.
  • Soften an tough cuticles with a bit of the organic olive oil. You can use cuticle oil, but olive oil works just as well. ecodiva tip: unless you are a professional, avoid cutting your cuticles. Instead, use a cuticle stick, (or popsicle stick) to gently push your cucticles back slightly for a clean look.

The Cover Up

  • Treat your toe nails just as you would your finger nails. Apply a base coat before the polish followed by two thin coats of your favorite polish. Try a natural polish to avoid known toxins found in nail polish. Try the amazing high quality natural colors from Zoya Nail Polish.

Enjoy Your New Fabulous Feet

  • Every 2-3 days, touch up the nails with a clear base coat. Your polish should last 1-2 weeks depending on your activities.
  • Store nail polish in a cool dry place and don't shake before using. This created bubbles and uneven application.
  • Now, go enjoy the feeling of fabulous winter feet...it wil be your little luxurious secret.

Enjoy!
