Hair care products for your tote bag to keep hair protected and healthy while in the sun, surf and sand.

Packing a tote sometimes just means throwing a towel and summer novel into a bag and heading out the door. The summer elements wreak havoc on hair so take care at the lake or seaside to keep hair soft, shiny and healthy.

Comb

  • A wide-toothed comb will prevent matting, knots and tangles.
  • Use a professional quality comb. Cheap, drugstore combs have microscopic seams on the teeth that snag and break strands. Look for a comb that is static-free, ionic, or made with silk.
  • Cricket, Dannyco and Silkline all make good quality combs starting at $5. Think of a professional comb as an investment. Don’t spend hundreds of dollars on cuts, colours, professional product and styling tools just to break off strands of hair with a poor quality comb.

Shampoo

  • Sand is abrasive on the hair. It can snap hair and rough-up the cuticle which causes colour fading. Suntan oil and sweat make hair greasy and can cause scalp irritation if not washed out. Too much salt water can dry out hair quickly.
  • A gentle shampoo like Rusk’s Calm or ghd’s tenderness shampoo will sufficiently wash away these felons while showering at the waterfront.
  • Don’t take a deep cleansing shampoo to the beach. Using this type too frequently can strip naturally moisturizing oils from the scalp and hair that are needed in the sun to prevent further drying. Use a clarifying or chelating shampoo at home, or wash hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner when ready to style hair and go out for the night.
  • Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Two or ghd’s purifying shampoo are good choices to remove product build-up, oils and pollutants. Paul Mitchell’s Shampoo Three is a chelating shampoo that also removes chlorine, iron, minerals and medications from the hair.

Leave in Treatment

  • On wet hair, use a deep moisturizing mask, cream or spray. This will make it easier to comb both wet and dry hair, and will prevent breakage caused by stressing the hair. Slather treatment on after a dip in the water and leave it in until the next swim. In hot summer weather, there will always be more than one plunge to keep cool.
  • Treatments replace lost moisture from the heat of the sun, salt water and wind damage. They also prevent further damage by coating the hair shaft so that there is a protective barrier between hair and the elements.
  • Try Joico’s K-PAK Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, which won behindthechair.com’s 2008 Stylist Choice Award for Best Deep or Restorative Conditioner.
  • Not a swimmer? Sprays for dry hair will protect as well. Frédéric Fekkai’s Summer Hair Sunshine Shield Spray has Solarshield Technology to prevent UV damage.
  • Don’t expect to keep a perfect ‘do while suntanning. Sweat, sun and wind will still affect your hair. So will sand that is kicked up by others, and suntan oil or sunblock that you have on your hands.

Ultimately a hat and bathing cap are the best bets for preventing damage to hair. Learn more about how the summer elements damage hair in the article Summer Hair Care.
