Hair that is very oily looks lank and greasy often within a few hours of shampooing. Try these oily hair solutions for shiny and healthy looking hair.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, oily hair may be caused by an imbalance of hormones due to stress or contraceptive pills or even over brushing of the hair which encourages oil to move from the scalp to the hair ends. Washing hair every day is recommended to treat the problem but may not always be practical. Use these tips to reduce the amount of oil on hair that gives it the lank and greasy look.

Shampooing

When shopping for a shampoo, look for a clarifying, volumizing or oil controlling formula. A clear shampoo tends to have fewer chemicals in it and therefore is gentler on the hair. If these kinds are unavailable, dilute any regular shampoo and use. Only use lukewarm or cool water to wash and rinse hair as high heat and humidity can increase oiliness. Reduce or eliminate conditioners; instead use a final rinse of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar.

Hair Styles

Choose an easy to manage style that gives the hair body and volume, a shorter style often works well. A cut with lots of layers makes the overall appearance of fine, greasy hair seem fuller and doesn’t lay flat against the head. Avoid a hairstyle with bangs as the grease and oil from the forehead may migrate to the hair and make oily hair worse.

Keep the hair up and away from the face and if you have longer hair consider wearing it in a pony tail often. Try not to blow dry hair but if it needs to be done use the low heat only. A light perm on the hair may help to give it a gentle lift away from the scalp and help with the overall appearance of oily hair and oil dispersion.

In Between Washes

Keep hands away from the scalp throughout the day and get out of the habit of running your hands through your hair. Try a very small amount of these powders in the hair to dry up oil in between washes; baby powder, corn meal, corn starch or spray type shampoos. Skin blotting papers may be effective also. Be careful about using these methods if you have any lung problems as they may be a cause of irritation.

By trying one or more of these methods you may find that the hair has more volume and is less greasy looking and may not need shampooing every day. If natural methods are not successful in treating oily hair an appointment may be necessary with a medical professional to discuss a hormone imbalance or alternative methods of contraception.
