Fusion hair is a method of permanent hair extension. If applied and maintained properly, they are an excellent alternative to gluing, sewing or clip extensions.

Fusion human hair extensions are considered a form of permanent hair extensions. Traditional extensions attach to the hair by gluing, sewing, clipping or tubing only lasting a week to a couple months depending on method and care. Fusion hair lasts 3 to 6 months with proper maintenance and care, appear completely natural and can be styled using the same methods as natural hair without extensions.

About Fusion Hair Extensions

Fusion hair is attached though an application process called fusion bonding. Several strands of hair are separated and the hair extensions are attached in small bundles with a glue or protein bond close to the scalp. If the process is completed properly by an experienced, licensed professional hair stylist, these hair extensions appear natural and are non-damaging to the scalp and natural hair.

Hot and Cold Fusion

Extensions are attached using one of two systems, hot or cold fusion. Both techniques produce long lasting, natural results and the method selected will be based on the clients preference and the hair stylists experience.

  • Hot fusion – The most common method of fusion human hair extension attachment. Bundles of hair are attached to the natural hair using small amounts of glue or keratin based polymer with a special heating tool.
  • Cold fusion – This method is typically used for fine or thin hair. Bundles are attached by small keratin bonds using a sonic attachment tool and not heat.

Advantages of Fusion Extensions

  • Appearance – Fusion extensions use human hair only and are available in a variety of colors and textures to allow for a proper match to the natural hair. When properly installed, cut and styled fusion human hair extensions blend perfectly.
  • Long lasting – Traditional extensions last from one week to 2 months depending on the method of attachment. Fusion techniques allow extensions to last 3 to 6 months with proper care and maintenance.
  • Ideal for all hair types – Fine and thin hair is the most difficult to add extensions too. However, fusion can add thickness and length to any type or texture hair.
  • Non-damaging – If installed, maintained and removed properly, fusion bonding will not damage the natural hair at any point in the process.

Disadvantages of Fusion Bonding

  • Price – Fusion hair extensions are more expensive than other bonding methods, averaging from $800 to $1000 or more depending on the length of hair, number or hair bundles used and time required to “install” or bond to the natural hair.
  • Accidental bond detachment – Bonds can accidentally release if not properly cared for. Oil based styling products, blow drying, flat irons and curling irons can cause the bonds to weaken and release from the natural hair.

Are Fusion Human Hair Extensions the Best Choice?

Ultimately the decision of what hair extension technique to use is a personal decision by the client and experience of the hair stylist. Though they are the most expensive method, they are considered permanent due to their long lasting nature and natural appearance. If applied properly they can add length, thickness and improve the overall appearance of natural hair.
