Choosing the right accessory to hold your hair bun will say a lot about your style. Make sure you pick the right tool!
Once you know how to put your hair in a bun (also called a chignon) or a French roll, it's good to have some options to hold it in place. Of course, you can just twist it up and tie it in a knot, but you may want some other styling options in case you'd prefer a more elegant look. Knowing what to use is about more than just function. Your choice of bun accessory can take your hairstyle from blue jeans to formal in an instant.
- Invisible. The old faithful bobby pin is still around for a reason. It's the best invisible hair pin choice on the market. For about a dollar, you can buy a stack of them at the drug store and be ever ready to clip and hold your hair up secretly in all sorts of styles. Just remember to clip enough hair to keep it in place, but choose a section that's under another bit of hair to hide the clip. It's easy to do with this tool because they're designed to be inconspicuous. Practice makes perfect, but even if a small bit of pin shows, you haven't broken any beauty laws.
- Made to show. Decorated bobby pins had quite a day a few years ago, but they still have a place in today's bun styles. You do the same tuck-and-pin as above, but leave the very end of the pin exposed, particularly its decorative part. This is a nice way to add a small bit of sparkle for a special occasion.
- Relaxed clips. For a casual look, you can hold your twisted bun in place with a claw clip. Of course, the whole accessory will show, and this is definitely a low-key look, but it's a great way of keeping your bun from looking too formal for events like an afternoon barbecue or even a trip to the gym.
- Emergency control. In a real pinch or for a bad-hair day, you can put your hair in a ponytail using an elastic band, then pull the ends back through the band until you've got a bun look. A bit sloppy, but you've got to love the simplicity. Good for a just-out-of-bed, sipping coffee, but before shower look. Sleepy glamour.
- Sophisticated. For a special occasion, discreetly pin your bun with the traditional bobby pin, then accessorize for looks only. This is your chance to pick something beautiful, whether or not it actually holds your bun in place. You can choose combs, clips or even a flower to tuck into a fold.
